The Voice of Democracy® audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, more than 26,000 9th through 12th grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $1.4 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.
The Patriot’s Pen® essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Each year, more than 60,000 students in 6th through 8th grades enter for a chance to win their share of nearly $1 million in state and national awards.

Each year the VFW recognizes three exceptional teachers - one each from the elementary, junior high and high school levels - for their outstanding commitment to teach Americanism and instill patriotism in their students.

Any individual/group, who serves in a municipal, county, state or federal unit tasked with enforcement of the laws pertaining to their area of responsibility. This award does not apply to individuals employed by private companies or security services.
Any individual/group, who serves in a municipal, county, state or federal unit tasked with providing the vital link between callers in distress and emer gency response teams by obtaining essential infor mation to send the appropriate responders to the right location.
Any individual/group, who actively gives emer gency medical treatment, provides rescue service or civil disaster assistance as a member of any public or volunteer company organized to give emergency medical care, provide rescue and civil disaster assistance to our nation’s citizens.
Any individual/group, who actively fights fires as a member of any public or volunteer company organized to fight fires and give assistance to our nation’s citizens.
Any individual/group, who serves in a municipal, county, state or federal unit tasked with the en forcement of the laws and special handling pertain ing to disposal of explosive threats to our nation's citizens.

Annually, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States recognizes individuals who are: Eagle Scouts, Girl Scout Gold Award recipients, Venture Summit Award recipients and/or Sea Scout Quartermasters who have risen above their peers in exemplifying the qualities of that rank.
Honors individuals who have, without regard for their own comfort, taken action resulting in the saving of another human life.
Honors individuals who, in the execution of their assigned duties, have taken action resulting in the saving of another human life.
Honors civilians who have taken action resulting in the saving of another human life and have placed their own safety at risk.
